Name of Range: Altcar Ranges
Location: Hightown, near Formby, Lancashire.
Type: Military (TA). Photo I.D. is required to enter the camp.
Number of Targets: A, B, C and D ranges. A range not used for fullbore rifle. B range has 30 targets up to 300yds. C range has 30 targets 300-600yds although half the range is ETR. D range has 10 targets 900-1000yds.
Terrain: Very flat links, directly next to the sea. The grass between the firing points is usually immaculate and at times there has been a pitch and putt course cut between the ranges. The butts are in sand dunes.
Firing Points: Good grass firing points. Not elevated very much but are quite sloped. The firing points on D range are just pegs in the flat grass.
Facilities: One large car park and several smaller ones. Toilets and Red Rose licensed bar.
Range direction: West
Prevailing conditions: Sea breezes are sometimes strong but generally consistent. The light is bad in the late afternoon because the sun sets behind the targets, and cross-shots are common.
Flora and Fauna: Frogs, birds and wildlife in and around the stopbutts and danger area. Gorse bushes but not many trees.
Civilian Clubs: Manchester RC, Altcar RC, 101 RC, others.
Nearest Pub: Red Rose bar directly behind range car park. The Pheasant, on road in to Hightown, is good for meals.
